Google Local Search Ranking Update around September 7
Google may also have pushed out a local search ranking update around September 7th. This is in addition to the useful content update between August 25th and September 9th and the September 2022 core update that started on September 12th. Let’s not forget, we’re on the cusp of our fifth product rating update.
The local search forums thread has a bunch of local search engines reporting ranking changes for their clients on or around September 7th. Note that this wouldn’t be tied to any core or useful content updates, and is probably a stand-alone thing – if it is a thing.
Joy Hawkins, an experienced local SEO, said on the forums that “I’ve been hearing a few cases like this lately” where local rankings have changed dramatically. “Analyzing ranking drops is very time-consuming and requires a fairly in-depth knowledge of the website, company and competitors, so I hesitate to advise on this. I suggest that you check whether their organic ranking has also dropped or if it’s just a local package chart,” she added.
Some say it only affects the local pack and not other organic results. “Only the local package ranking has dropped, the organic ranking is still very good,” said one person.
Another company said their listing dropped out of the local package on September 9, two days after another. “I can confirm that the problem started on Friday 09/09/2022, so we appeared before that,” they wrote. While someone else said it was September 6th, “I have a SAB customer who has seen a complete drop in maps and local mappack. The drop seemed to start on September 6th and now everything is reporting zero views GBP,” they wrote.
Here’s a chart from that story shared by Adam DiFrisco on the forum:
Local SEO, Jason Brown wrote: “SAB contacted me saying they are no longer showing up. He contacted me on the 7th. I can get his KP to fire in Pasadena, but not when I change my location to Beaverton. Instead Instead, I get a company with a similar name that has their address displayed.”
Some say it was a temporary glitch: “I noticed a few similar ads on Friday. I assumed it was a bug and would be fixed soon. I remember from the listings that they are back to normal today.” But others still have problems.
Again, the thread is pretty jam-packed with examples of big changes in local Google search rankings, so check it out in the local search forums.
View directions icons on Google Maps for service area businesses (SABs) that you shouldn’t have — and they don’t work. Maybe it has to do with all the crazy swings we’re seeing with SAB. Something is broken…pic.twitter.com/iJq66XGTV4
